Unlimited PotentialI was truly blown away by an amazing, life changing feat of engineering recently. Teaching my ‘normal’ program became one eye opening moment after the other as I worked with my first ever student who had received a Team Unlimited arm. The student in the photo had lists of things she had never done before. Simply, she had never been able to use both hands to do anything simultaneously. It was so much fun, excitement and learning all rolled into one working with her on all the things I and 99% of children took for granted. It was truly a ‘kid in a lolly shop’ lesson. Every tiny achievement was awe inspiring. The effort and the reward, each new experience, the feel of different movement patterns and the excitement of her classmates has been one of the highlights of my teaching career. Her regular class teacher’s photographs of the activities done in the lesson were sent to her parent phones. The tears of joy that flowed as they collected her at the end of the day is the reason a group of very clever engineers makes limbs for children who for whatever reason have lost complete or partial limbs are driven to do what they do. Team UnLimbitedDesigning forearms for children using 3D printing technology and operating totally on a donations basis, Stephen Davies and Drew Murray provide life changing prosthetics that change children’s lives. Aware that children find artificial limbs strange and are fearful to just ‘dive in and try’ the materials allow the use of bright fun colours to provide visual appeal. Since 2015, Team Unlimbited have designed, printed and shipped prosthetics all over the UK free of charge. Their designs are open-source and published for use to improve children’s lives around the world. 3D printing technology makes the transfer of designs and creation of limbs simple from anywhere around the world. Having seen the life changing experience of a new arm first hand, and being privileged to witness the first real tough sporting challenges I am awestruck by such a wonderful concept and design.
